I was in DC over the past week and unable to attend. I definitely had reservations concerning AGENDA 21 and am looking for opinions of those who attended. Seems as though either people didn't attend or weren't impressed. If you were there, please post.
Having been on a Town Board during the development of our Smart Growth Plan, I found it to be a great way to help property owners decide the future development of their property and also let them choose the future for their town. They all had an opportunity to input and no one went away feeling as if they had been forced to submit to another person or entity.
Maybe on a global scale outside the US, people are being forced unfairly. Here in the US we still have a constitution and the way things get decided is by majority rule. A problem may ensue if the majority decides to let the minority make the rules by not getting off their collective butts. However, this does not make it unfair. To take away the right of the individual to make the decision for the future of his/her property by ending Smart Growth Planning for their municipality is abolishing the very laws that protects their right.
"Smart Growth Planning" might not be the best idea when the majority doesn't care enough to be involved, but then, what becomes the solution if you take it away? Do you look forward to a loud industrial plant going up in the middle of a residential area? How about a prison work release facility for convicted pedophiles next to an elementary school? Whether you appreciate it or not, we all benefit from guiding the growth of our neighborhoods.
As in most things, I think the best move is to pay attention, do more than talk to hear the sound of our own voice complaining and actually do something to elect someone you know agrees with your philosophy.

If you think I have the wrong impression of Agenda 21 and the solution to the problems we face, please post your opinion. I'm open to learning and common sense.
Thanks...
